'Do you write?' asked my 7 year old niece.
Promptly I replied, 'ofcourse, I do', thinking she would next ask me to write her a story. She then asked me the weblink and I was alarmed!
I clarified, ' a.. what?'
she looked at me with the pity-look "You dont write!"
I avoided the next obvious question "Uncle, how old are you?" I still dont believe she meant blogging! Was she kidding or playing with recently picked up jargon? Or are these kids so net savvy that books, papers have become something-of-older-generation to them? I didnt wait there to find out the truth!
At her age, I used to thank my parents for sending me to school only because the basic classes helped me to read the comic strips. The famous Pran publication's 'chacha chaudhry', then Raj comic publication's 'nagraj, dhruv..' would drive me crazy in no time [and they still do :-)]. I loved reading them specially while eating or having my favorite snack [and that was also the time when no one objected much for reading comics]. And yes there was this 'champak' we used to get it from our newspaper vendor every week. Early morning I could hear him drop the newspapers from the gaps between the doors... Half asleep I would open the nearest window quietly and would whisper 'uncle, do u have champak?' [the word 'Champak' sounds funny now ... we use it now for referring it to someone who is 'dhuh' :)] I envied all characters in those strips, spl. 'raju' under its regular 'raju aur nanhi gilahri' section, who had this intelligent squirrel. I yearned for a similar character and a gifted companion and prayed for it on numerous occasions (on my birthdays, various temple visits ...). I didnt get squirrels or parrots or dogs, but I believe my prayers were partly answered. Take out all fancy elements and you end up with a name that can come closest to reality, 'raju'! Friends would hardly call me by my real name.. instead 'Raju' was their natural choice.
Lost in my own world, my parents had tough time with my performance at school. Teachers complained that I was not interested in reading and writing. The daydreamer in Calvin and Hobbes strip comes very close in describing me in my childhood days. But as every story ends and you come to real world, the calvin in me took a back seat in my teens. Phew..
+2, college, job... days were never dull but I never sat down to capture them in words. Recently, after getting hooked to photography I finally thought I should spend a little more time (more so because I am already spending good time with laptop uploading or storing pics) in penning down some of those phases / childhood fancies or beautiful moments I had or the ones that are yet to come .. some in pics and some in words and hence this blog... "calling it a day'.
Gizmo Kid, I do have a blog link and yes, I can write :)
